Every fantasy football owner is always looking for the next move to propel his team to championship status. I will highlight one player from each major position that had a fantasy football break out game in week 9 and share with you my sleeper’s for week 10.
Fantasy Football Week 9 Breakout Players:
QB= The Ninja’s Week 9 Breakout QB is the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year honors at the halfway point of the season and has led the Indianapolis Colts to more wins in 8 games than they had all of last year, Andrew Luck. Luck threw himself into the record books Sunday against the Miami Dolphins as he set the in game rookie record for passing yards with 433 and also added 2 touchdown passes to lead his Colts to yet another win (5-3). Luck will face the Jacksonville Jaguars defense this Sunday which are currently ranked 25th at stopping the pass as they give up 255 yards through the air a game. Luck threw for 297 yards in Week 8 before his record setting day in Week 9 and look for more success from Luck in Week 10.
RB= The Ninjas’ Week 9 Breakout RB was the Ninja’s Week 8 Breakout RB and would be the leader for the Rookie of the Year award if not for the season that Andrew Luck is having, Doug Martin “The Muscle Hamster”. Martin has gone on record saying that he hates the nickname, and after his last two weeks defenses around the league hate him. Martin ran for a franchise record Sunday against the Oakland Raiders as he rushed for 251 yards and capped off the record setting day with 4 touchdowns on the ground. Martin also added 4 receptions for 21 yards Sunday as his fantasy stock has risen dramatically in the past two weeks, especially in PPR leagues. Martin is going up against a stout San Diego Chargers rush defense Sunday but is still a must start in all fantasy leagues.
WR= The Ninja’s Week 9 Breakout WR is former University of Central Florida star and Jay Cutler’s favorite target, Brandon Marshall. Marshall shredded the Tennessee Titans secondary all day in route to a 9 catch, 122 yards, and 3 touchdown day. Marshall is on pace to set a Chicago Bear franchise record for catches (118), yards (1,594) and touchdowns (14) in a season and is not showing any signs of slowing down. Over the past three games Marshall has averaged 8 receptions, 100 yards, and 1 TD. Marshall is the number 1 fantasy receiver according to Yahoo Sports with 197 points on the year; AJ Green is second with 184 points.
Fantasy Football Week 10 Sleepers:
QB= The Ninja’s Sleeper QB is Phillip “Cheese” Rivers. Not many know this nickname but it was given to Rivers in his junior year at North Carolina State due to the goofy smile that is always on his face. Charger fans and fantasy owners alike want to see a lot of “cheesin” coming from Rivers Sunday vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rivers may be coming off his best overall game of the year last week against the Chiefs on Thursday Night football as he threw for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rivers is facing a Buccaneer defense this week that has not been able to stop or even slow down opposing teams passing attacks as they give up 321 yards through the air a game, which is the worst in the NFL. Look for this trend to continue and for River’s to have a big day.
RB= The Ninja’s Sleeper RB is Michael “The Burner” Turner. Turner is coming off his best week over the past month as he ran for 102 yards and a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Turner had 10 points combine in the previous two weeks (Week 6, Week 8) before turning in 16 point performance against the Cowboys. The best news for Turner owners Sunday had nothing to do with Turner’s performance, but was the lack of back up running back Jacquizz Rodgers touches and performance. Rodgers has stolen some red zone TDs from Turner and does the majority of receiving out of the backfield for Atlanta, but only saw 3 carries Sunday compared to Turner’s 20.
WR= The Ninja’s Sleeper WR is Kendall Wright from the Tennessee Titans. Wright is coming off a sub-par performance against the Chicago Bears where he only caught 2 passes for 30 yards. A big part of Wright’s lack of success was due to lack of an opportunity as the Titans turned the ball over 5 times Sunday. Wright was also slowed down by a nagging elbow injury Sunday but stated today that he feels 100% going into his Week 10 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are currently ranked 30th in the league against the pass as they give up 298 yards a game through the air so look for Wright to have a bounce back game.
W/R= The Ninja’s Sleeper WR/RB is Stevan Ridley from the New England Patriots. Ridley is coming off a bye week and should have well rested legs for his Week 10 matchup against the Buffalo Bills who are currently giving up 169.5 yards per game on the ground. Ridley has received a good amount of carries, especially for the Patriots, as he carried the ball 16 times in Week 6, 17 in Week 7, and 15 in Week 8. The matchup is screaming run the ball this week so look for Coach Belichick to exploit this advantage and for Ridley to be the main beneficiary through the ground game on Sunday. Brandon Bolden has seen his carries rise in consecutive games but Ridley is still receiving 70% of the run calls.
TE= The Ninja’s Sleeper TE is Brandon Myers from the Oakland Raiders. Myers had his best fantasy day of the season last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he reeled in 8 passes for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns. Myers also led the Raiders in targets Sunday as he saw 13 balls thrown his way. Somehow Myers is still available in 65% of leagues according to Yahoo Sports and after Sunday’s game he is the 7th best tight end in the league in terms of fantasy points. The Raiders are playing the Baltimore Ravens Sunday which are currently ranked 22ed in the league at stopping the pass so look for the Raiders to throw ball. Myers has averaged 14.3 fantasy points over his last three games.
K= The Ninja’s Sleeper K is Greg Zuerlein from the St. Louis Rams. Zuerlein is currently available in 63% of leagues according to Yahoo Sports and is currently the 8th best kicker in the league in terms of fantasy points. Zuerlein’s Rams face the San Francisco 49ers defense this week and will most likely stall on majority of offensive drives as the niners have the best defense in the league. This should set up opportunities for Zuerlein to have a good day Sunday.
Defense= The Ninja’s Sleeper DEF is the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers are going up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday which have the hottest offense in the league over the past 4 weeks, but the Chargers just have a knack for creating turnovers. The Chargers are in the top 5 around the league at creating turnovers (8 INTs, 9 Fumble Rec) and are the 4th best defense in the league in terms of fantasy points. They are also available in 56% of leagues according to Yahoo Sports.
